Biography

The cult Doom Death Metal patrol from The Netherlands is back! After 2007’s outstanding live reunion performance at Germany’s Party.San Open Air had the entire underground scene speaking highly of the return of ASPHYX, it was especially the strength of their 2009 studio comeback-album “Death... The Brutal Way” which kick-started a glorious new chapter for this old-school formation. “Death…The Brutal Way” showcased all of the band’s beloved and extremely uncompromising musical trademarks in the full beauty of their purest rawness: The ancient doomy groove, the chainsaw-like guitar sound guiding through a thunderstorm of riffs, the straight-forward and proudly non-technical songwriting, the overall atmospheric instrumental darkness and of course this all crowned by the unbelievably heavy and outstandingly original death-grunts of the mighty Martin van Drunen.

After an entire year of acclaimed international appearances promoting the latest studio release and especially after more than two decades of ASPHYX’s (diabolical) existence, it felt in right timing to launch the band’s first ever DVD / Live Album at last. “Live Death Doom” incidentally contains the footage captured at the Turock venue in Essen / Germany on July 4th, 2009 during the sold-out release-show for the “Death…The Brutal Way” album and will easily serve as merciless proof to explain why ASPHYX are considered one of the most striking messengers of the traditional Doom Death Metal style. Next to the mentioned 2+ hours main live show (“Live”), the DVD also presents an in-depth and detailed “Hordes Of Disgust” band documentary (“Death”), shot with participation of both former and current band members in the original locations of the band’s main historical steps. And last but not least, a thick section of bonus materials and bootleg footage from different places and eras (“Doom”), comprising some of both the past’s and the present’s several line-up’s of the band, rounds off this jam-packed release of almost 4 hours of playing time.

Acclaimed Swedish producer Dan Swanö (Edge Of Sanity, Bloodbath, etc.), who had previously already mixed and mastered the “Death…The Brutal Way” album, was assigned to mix the Essen live show to sonic excellence and the ultra-heavy results now serve as the first ever 2CD live-album release by ASPHYX. While this main show of “Live Death Doom” still features the latest studio album’s line up including Wannes Gubbels on bass/backing vocals, ASPHYX’s recently added new bass player Alwin Zuur (ex Pulverizer, Escutcheon) is also already introduced in the DVD’s documentary section and debuts on stage with the band on some of the release’s bonus footage material. Additionally remarkable about “Live Death Doom” is also the return of classic ASPHYX cover artist Axel Hermann, who once again very suitably managed to add an obscure and morbid vibe to the band’s presentation!

Originally unearthed in the year 1987 under the death-obsessed influences of genre inventors such as Venom, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost or Slaughter, ASPHYX conquered the worldwide old school Death Metal underground instantly with their early Demo / 7” releases. The band further marked their destructive path with the release of genre classics such as “The Rack” and “The Last One On Earth” as well as touring with fellow Death Metal forerunners like Entombed, Benediction or also Bolt Thrower in the early 90’s, before going through several drastic changes of line-up as well as longer periods of inactivity, prior to their acclaimed reunion in 2007.

“Live Death Doom” is not only yet another energetic sign of life, but it is more importantly a clear evidence for ASPHYX’s ongoing triumphant march and the band’s unbroken relevance amongst a new generation of Death Metal listeners and supporters. Death beyond death!..
